Overview
This Learning Module will focus on why and how the hips and pelvis need to be leveled during the transition between turns.
Position of Hips Throughout the Phases of the Turn
The hips and pelvis will naturally assume an angled position the more the core and body move inside the turn.

The hips need to be leveled when returning to the Athletic Stance to be ready for the start of the next turn, as shown in the following picture.

How to Level your Hips
As the outside ski accelerates, allow the energy from the ski to move your knees upwards during the transition.
As you start to apply pressure to the ‘new’ outside ski, lift the heel or thigh of the ‘old’ outside leg. This action is very effective on steep terrain. The movement should be subtle and not cause the body to rise or pop up.
Key Takeaways
During the transition between turns, it is essential to level the hips to return to the Athletic Stance, ensuring readiness for the next turn.
Hips can be levelled with two techniques. First, allow the energy in the outside ski to move the knees upwards. Second, especially on steeper terrain, lift the heel or thigh of the ‘old’ outside leg.
